CERT Graduates

Congratulations to all the CERT Graduates, and many thanks to the volunteer "victims" and the CERT instructors.

Thirty-two more people graduated from the eight-week CERT class on Thursday, February 28!

This class had several family members and friends of previous CERT graduates as well as two members who came back for a refresher course.

Thank you to all the folks who demonstrated their commitment to personal preparedness by their time and effort in becoming CERT-trained.  Thanks, too (as always!), to our volunteers who help make the CERT final a fun and interesting event for the students.

Fall 2007 Class

On Thursday, October 25, twenty-one people graduated from the CERT class.

The class was made up of citizens from Brier, Edmonds, Everett, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace.

Each class has its own, unique flavor, and this was no exception.  Many of the students in this group are involved with other volunteer groups such as Lynnwood Citizens' Patrol, Medical Reserve Corps, and Pasado's Safe Haven.

CERT training meshes with their interest in helping others, prepares them against personal disaster, and enhances their existing skills and abilities.

Spring 2007 Class

Twenty-five people in the south Snohomish and north King Counties area graduated from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program offered by the Emergency Services Coordinating Agency (ESCA).

The CERT students received 24-hours of classroom instruction over an eight week period.  The course covered fire safety, urban search and rescue, disaster medical operations, disaster psychology, and terrorism.  The course Final provided an opportunity to practice the new skills and knowledge with a disaster scenario that included an “earthquake” and multiple “victims” for the students to rescue.

Jamie Gravelle, the CERT Program Manager, was very enthusiastic about the students.  "Every class is filled with outstanding people," she explained, "but this one was a little unusual in the diversity in ages and backgrounds.  We had Boy Scouts and senior citizens, nurses, dog trainers, chemists, and everyone in-between.

“At the same time, there were several families and neighborhood friends who came as small groups,” she continued.  “The class connected with each other really quickly, and it showed in their performance during the Final.  They did an outstanding job."

Winter 2007 Class

The first CERT class of 2007 produced 20 new CERT graduates.  Just two days after "graduation," several members of the group were able to experience rescue operations by being a victim in ESCA's full-scale volunteer exercise.  (For more information, to go:  St. Edward Park: Earthquake Exercise.)

Fall 2006 Class

The Fall class created 24 new CERT graduates.  The class showed great enthusiasm in all aspects of the training, and they were the first to experience some new components of the "infamous" CERT final.

Spring 2006 Class

Twenty-one people graduated from this class.  It was a very talented group with two of our youngest students ever.

Winter 2006 Class

January was unusual for ESCA.  For the first time, two CERT classes were run at the same time.  One class was offered on the usual Thursday evening schedule, and the other class was offered on Saturdays.

At the end of the CERT training sessions, the two classes were brought together for the final exam.  This included a written, take-home test and an opportunity to try out new skills:  lifting and cribbing, search and rescue, medical and triage.
