Amateur Radio

Radio Use in Disaster

Amateur radio operators ("hams") have a long history of helping during disaster.

When normal communication channels are down, radio operators are able to pass critical information and messages by using their amateur radios and the appropriate radio frequencies.

As part of the ESCA plan and response, the agency is ably supported by a strong group of Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) volunteers.  These individuals are committed to providing emergency radio operations during local disaster.

Along with this core group, many of the CERT Leaders have obtained their amateur licenses to be more effective during an activation.

If you would like to learn more about RACES or about amateur licenses in general, contact Dan Good at (425)776-3722, or you can email him by clicking on this link.

Practice Tests

Amateur radio licenses are available by either taking classes or by studying on your own and taking a test as provided by the local radio clubs.  (For more information on local classes and test opportunities, go to http://www.mikeandkey.org/education.htm.)

It is often helpful to take practice tests online until the student is regularly passing the tests.  One such location is:  http://www.qrz.com/testing.html.

Thanks to one of our volunteers, Charlie Parks, a database of the test questions is also included below.

Please note that there are three levels of licensing.  The entry level is the TECHNICIAN class.  The GENERAL license is next, and the final license is the EXTRA.

For RACES and CERT Leaders, the TECHNICIAN level is all that is required.
