 Fall and Winter Preparation Tips!

Take some time now to prepare.  Taking these simple steps today, may save you from problems tomorrow.

 Basic Preparedness

  1. Update your disaster plan (including your contact list) and refresh your disaster kit.  Make sure everything is up-to-date.
  2. Refresh your disaster kit:  Change out batteries, food and water supplies, etc.
  3. Think about "comfort" items for your disaster kit.
  4. Don't let your gas tank drop below the half-full mark.  Your car can provide information (the radio!) and heat if there's a power outage as well as transportation.
  5. Have a small disaster kit in your car.

   Winterize Your Car

  1.  Get your oil changed.

  2. Change windshield wipers and fill up windshield wiper fluid.

  3. Get your battery checked.  Clean up corrosion, etc.

  4. Check belts and hoses.

  5. Check tire pressure.

  6. Check tires for wear.  Replace as necessary.

  7. Check antifreeze.

  8. Do a “safety check”:  All lights, defroster, heater, etc.

  9. Update your car’s disaster kit.  Make sure you have an ice-scraper.

   Winterize Your Home

  1. Inspect furnace and clean ducts.  If you heat with oil, refill the tank.

  2. Have chimney cleaned and inspected.  (Do you have appropriate fuel available…firewood, pellets, etc.?)

  3. Check windows and doors.  Replace weatherstripping as necessary.

  4. Clean gutters and downspouts.

  5. Store gardening materials.

  6. Check foundations.  Seal up cracks and holes.  Secure crawlspaces.

  7. Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.  Change batteries if you didn’t do it when you reset your clocks.

  8. Drain garden hoses and insulate any exposed pipes.

  9. Trim branches back from the house or electrical wires.

  10. Update the home disaster kit.
